Flat Needle Felting, The V. Basics

YOU WILL NEED:

NEEDLE FELTING HANDLE AND NEEDLE.(PACK AS THEY BREAK EASILY)

WIRE COMBS

PRE-FELT

FIBRES (WOOL TOPS)

FOAM BACKING

BLACK MARKER

SIMPLE IDEA TO START

STEPS

DRAW IN PENCIL ONTO A SHEET OF PRE-FELT

You can use a light box to trace an image or place the piece of felt over an image against a window

USE A DARK MARKER TO OUTLINE DRAWING

I sometimes draw in a little of the shading here too.

SEE POSTS ABOUT SELECTING COLOURS FOR PRE-FELT AND TECHNIQUES IN WHERE TO START, i.e. OUTLINE FIRST OR BACKGROUND.

PLACE PRE-FELT ONTOP OF FOAM BACKING AND ONTOP OF A PIECE OF BOARD OR PLASTIC.
Foam prevents the needle from snapping, and from the fibres clinging to other surfaces.
Plastic etc. prevents you from ending with thousands or needle pricks!!!
Specific foam backing can be purchased, but I recycled a bit of an old deckchair cushion.
TEAR OFF A SMALL PIECE OF FIBRE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE ABOVE IMAGE
Less is more
PUNCH THROUGH TO SECURE TO BACKGROUND.
The more you stab it, the stronger the colour appears.
This is how you blend colours, layer a small bit of fibres between two wire brushes…I also “hand” blend, pick off pieces like candy floss and shuffle them back together….layering different colours works too.
Some more basic step by steps here…(i’m not patient enough and my techniques are a little differnt but its a good link to become more familiar with felt)

COMPOSING SOME TUTORIAL VIDEOS ASAP TO COMPLIMENT THIS POST….

HERE ARE SOME THINGS TO BE COVERED……

  • TOOLS, BASICALLY WHAT THEY DO
  • TECHNIQUES…HOW TO BEGIN AND WHERE TO START
  • TECHNIQUE DEVELOPMENT…ER…WHAT U DO NEXT, LAYERING, AND BUILDING UP DEPTH
  • REFINING, HOW TO JUDGE IF ITS FINISHED AND HOW TO ACHIEVE CONTRAST AND OUTLINE…

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE PEOPLE WOULD LIKE?

WHAT MAKES A GOOD VIDEO?..IE SMALL VIDEOS SO EASY TO LOAD AN DLOCATE ASPECTS YOU WANT AND ACCOMPANIED PICTURE STEPS??

SUGGESTIONS GREATLY WELCOME AND THANKS.
